Cruciate Surgery

In the dogs knee are  two cruciate ligaments with crossover, the front one of the two is very prone to strain and rupture causing a severe hind leg lameness

Cruciate ligaments are a common problem in the dog, in people they are a footballer's or a skier's injury.

There are many different methods of repair  the latest of which involves  reshaping the tibia bone to alter  the angles in the knee joint.

These newer methods have the great advantage of earlier return to function and much better long term results with less arthritis.

Orthopaedic Surgery

The full range of different orthopaedic operations are carried out at the main Blackburn surgery. These include total hip replacement in the dog and complex bone reshaping procedure for dogs with cruciate ligament problems.

Martin Gabbutt is happy to discuss any of the various options for  resolution of orthopaedic problems in your pet. Martin Gabbut has been trained in America to perform the latest in cementless replacement hips.

Reshaping techniques

The latest technique is called TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) below are pictures of a bone model showing the procedure and a post operative X-ray of a dog which has had the operation.

Martin Gabbutt learnt the technique at a surgical summit in Washington DC in 2009 from the surgeon who invented it. The results are very good, often with a return to normal function within  a week or two.

There are other reshaping techniques. Below is a picture of an Australian technique called TTO. Mr Gabbutt learnt this from its originator, Dr Warwick Bruce an Australian surgeon.
